If you want to buy a house, you have to have a mortgage. What does taken negatively mean?

the problem is that greedy people wanting to make $$$, gave loans for mortgages to lots of broke people would could not afford a home or a house payment. (sub-prime crisis).

Also, many people, trying to keep up with the jones, bought bigger homes with larger mortgages than they could afford.

I disagree with the answerer who said that you have to have a mortgage. I’ve heard of working Americans under thirty paying cash for a house. People still have them because they’re in a rush to buy houses.
