Is it smart to get one of these credit cards?

I have ok to bad credit – I keep getting offers for those credit cards that have $300-500 limits but they have ridiculous fees. I usually throw them away as I feel they rip you off.

I just got an offer for a visa with a $500 limit but it has a $100 signup fee and $11 monthly fee. My question is; would it be wise to get one of these cards to help build my credit? The fees are no problem for me to pay as I have a nice income now – I just feel it is a ripoff but I am willing to do this if it would help build my credit back up. I can also pay off the monthly balance or not have a balance at all as I pay for everything with a debit card now.

What do you think? I am trying to rebuild credit so I can buy a house.

Instead of paying interest to a credit card (and if you don’t pay interest…ie you pay it all off each month…it will not affect your credit score), why not “pay interest” to yourself? Charge yourself 5% of every purchase you make (be brutally honest about this) and put it all in a high-interest savings account. By the time paying interest to someone else has impacted your credit score, you’ll have enough cash for a substantial down-payment, and you’ll get a better mortgage!

    Good luck!

I think you need to improve your credit score. To find out specifically what you must do to raise your score, you can order your score report from all three national credit bureaus. In addition to your scoreyou still have to pay to find out your credit score, the three-digit number ranging from 300 to 850 that is the key to your borrowing costs.

No, those are all rip offs.

Work with a local credit union or bank. You may have to start with a secured card. Just make sure they report to the credit bureaus. Obviously, make all the payments on time. The first month, carry over a small balance ($20.) just to make sure it generates to the credit bureaus.

Talk to the same credit union or bank about a mortgage. Many will tell you exactly how to build your credit to qualify for a good mortgage.

    Good Luck!

My advice would be to see a financial advisor – they will help you tremendously with figuring out just what you need to do to establish good credit and in what order you should be doing it. Don’t rush into getting a credit card – especially the one you describe. Look up financial advisors online in your area – there are places you can go to that are free of charge.
