Health insurance? How does it work when my wife has her own policy and I have a family policy?

She is pregnant with our first child and I am just curious how the insurance companies work when she is covered by 2 different plans. I am thinking of putting her on my plan to save money in the long run, because pregnancy is a little pricey. Both insurances are 80/20 and $3000 max out of pocket. Any info would be grand thanks.

Her plan is primary, and yours is secondary.

If both plans are 80/20, it doesn’t work that your plan will pick up 80% of her 20% from her plan, so THAT isn’t going to save you any money. You’re still going to end up paying $3,000 out of pocket, or 20%, whichever is less – you might just have two insurance companies fighting over it, saying, “no, HE has to pay!”. More hassle than it’s worth.

If the insurance she has is through her employer that would be a the Primary insurance plan for her, then your would be a secondary plan.
Most insurance plans have “non-duplication” clause on them.

Meaning….your plan ensures a claim is paid to atleast 80%, but if her insurance already paid 80% on the claim, yours will not pay anything until the out of pocket max is reached.

If both plans are 80/20 and $3k oop, there really is not a benefit and just added costs, I’d go to just one family plan if you save on premium costs.
