What information about the insurance industry would help me in an interview?
I have an interview for an actuarial position coming up. I’m pretty solid on probability, statistics, etc; but I don’t know a lot about insurance in general. Anybody have a good, solid answer that could give me some info going into the interview?

Life insurance is the only one that you can measure out accurately with statistics and probability. They don’t know when your house will burn down, or when you will be in a car accident, or when you get sick, but they do know when you are going to die by using mortality tables. That should score you some points. Good luck.
Get the company’s annual report prior to the interview. Read the section on the President’s report. See what is important to the president.
Find a good business library that has “Best’s Reports”, a monthly magazine, and browse a few issues.
Be prepared to discuss when you will take the next actuarial exam. Volunteer your status on the Validation by Educational Experience.
You don’t need to. People don’t expect actuaries to be sparkly conversationists.
