How do people who cancel their credit cards live?

These days you need a credit card to book a vacation, or to rent a car. As nice as debit cards are and I use one myself, its not always accepted by a business.
ooh okay thanks everyone :)

Actually, you can do both of the above using cash, although it tends to be more difficult. A vacation can be booked by paying cash for the deposit and then cash when the balance comes due. While it does vary by location, some rental agencies allow for using cash to rent cars (pre-qualify, reservation, some cash up front, non-refundable deposits).

I don’t have a credit card and I travel and rent cars with my debit card – which is a Visa debit card issued by my bank. If I’m using the card, the money is coming right out of my account. In other words, if I don’t have the money, I don’t spend it. I take at least two trips a year – I book my air and hotel on line – this way by the time the trip comes around, it’s already paid for except for any incidental charges at the hotel. I reserve the car on line, using my debit card, and when I return the vehicle, my card gets charged. It’s really easy to live within your means. That’s why so many people are having issues right now – they spent money they didn’t have.
