How hard is it to get certified to sell insurance?

I’m looking into a job that would require me to get certified in all kinds of insurance. I don’t have any experience in insurance. I’m pretty smart, not a genius but I made it through college in 4 years (double major- Poli Sci and Communication). What has your experience been like?
This is in New York State.

It is not as easy as most people think. However, you sound like an intelligent person, and I am sure with a little studying, you will do fine. I am sure they want you to become a licensed agent. There are classes – AD Banker is a good one – that can help you study for the exam. But, you really learn it by doing it, not studying a book. Good luck! It’s a great profession for women.

You will need a license and the requirements will vary by the type of insurance you sell and the state you are in. The two broad categories are Property and Casualty (P&C) and Life and Health (L&H). The P&C license, which allows you to sell auto and home insurance, is usually harder and in many states requires a minimum of classroom hours which can range from only a few to as many as 90. The L&H license is much easier and usually requires only self study. From my experience if you could graduate from college you are more than qualified to pass either test as long as you study a reasonable amount. Good luck. You can make good money doing this if you are good at it.

Well, it depends on how well you test. I’ve passed every licensing test I’ve taken, first time – but I’ve studied carefully to know the materials.

People who don’t test well tend to freeze under the pressure – and it IS a timed test.
