Each foundation or NGO sets its own rules for qualifying, applying, etc. For starters, the applicant organization MUST have its proper non-profit status[e.g. (501(c)(3) status] and letter of approval from the IRS. Purposes of the applicant organization must conform to the purposes of the foundation, etc. You will have to do a great deal of research to determine possible donors and their requirements.

Then hire a professional grant writer – fees are typically around $25,000 and up for larger organizations or larger grant requests. Writing grant proposals is a very tricky business, and you really do need a pro. Makes a tremendous difference in potential results, although nobody can ever guarantee you will get a cent. There is always extreme competition for funding for non-profit organizations, and as few as 1% of funding requests are ever granted.
