How can I get my husband to stop using credit cards?

Before I got married, I NEVER used my credit cards. I had them strictly for emergencies only. My husband has always used credit cards to buy everything. He has never been good with budgets. He uses his cards for gas, food, clothes, car repairs, everything. If we are running low on cash at the end of the pay period and want to go to a movie or dinner, his solution is to put it on the card. My solution is to not go. I have tried to explain that this is hurting us financially. I have showed him the bills, the miniumum payment due, our monthly budget. Nothing seems to work. I can’t cut up his cards or take them away from him. Any suggestions???

get him a new credit card with a small limit. You can get cards with like $500 limits. Maybe that will at least slow him down!

Easy. Tell him no more sex unless he stops.

“Accidentally” lose them somewhere…like maybe the trash after you’ve voided or cancelled them.

Have him take care of the budget for the next couple months.

you sure can take them away! and you should. like you said, this situation is hurting the both of you…not just him. take the credit cards and put them in a baggie full of water and toss the baggie in the freezer. the temptation is gone but the cards are still there for emergencies. it really works. good luck!

Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do except decide if this is worth divorcing over. If he is so bad with a budget, how will you ever save for large purchases? He will be a prime sucker for large interest rates and no down payment schemes like last year’s “only pay the interest” house mortgages.

Really nothing you can do if you can’t cut them up or take them away you could make his money and cards his problem and your money your problem split the bills in half and let him know whats due when and if he doesn’t comply let something get shut off it will totally freak him out

tell him to use only one card with low limit as per your budget, if he does not agree with u, then , u know what to say to him in the middle of the night. !!!

Open a separate bank account and make him pay the CC Bill with his money.

    Dear frustrated,

    Old habits die hard.

What you can do is to get him a new card linked with a new checking account in his name only. Have him take the responsibility of maintaining the account. Or give him a cash limit each month. When you go shopping with him, have plenty of cash ready to rescue him. In a way, as long as the credit card balance is paid off each month, you are OK.

When a spender marries a saver, it will take time to work it out.

    Good luck!

Add up the the past 12 months of your budget versus your income to show how much more he is spending than taking in. Add to the spending the total amount on the credit cards owed. If he does not stop, he does not care about you. See a lawyer before he ruins you financially.
