Term Life Insurances-Nicotine and insurance testing?

I am about to take a blood test for a term life insurance policy. I smoked a cigar about 10 days ago, and about 4 dips of snuff per week (for the past several months). Do they test for nicotine or some other chemical in tobacco to verify if I am a smoker or not? A friend of mine tested positive for smoking and he had smoked a cigar about two months previous…can they test that far back on a blood test???

Thanks

Some insurance companies do test for nicotine (cotinine actually, the breakdown product of nicotine). If you are regularly using snuff that will show up. Are you a former smoker?

If you have not used snuff or smoked in 10 days, your level should be low. But if the company thinks you are lying they could deny the policy or look more closely. Or, if you were to die of a smoking related illness within 2-3 years, they could deny benefits.

You have to have not had any type of tobacco product for at least 5 months to pass a paramedical exam as a non-smoker. There are some companies like Prudential, who have special policies for people who use tobacco other than cigs. You might want to check this out.

Premiums vary greatly for smoker policies between companies and you need to be sure your agent has checked around.

Yes they will test for nicotine in the blood test. If you dip on a weekly basis it is likely to show up in the blood test. I would go ahead and tell them that you use tobacco. If something happens in the next two years, the insurance company has the right to contest paying the death benefit if they can prove that you withheld a material fact, such as not telling them you used tobacco. Depending on the company they can either refuse to pay or change the death benefit to what your premiums would have paid if they knew you were a tobacco user.

As far as a blood test showing tobacco usage from a cigar smoked two months ago, I have never heard of that before and I would be surprised if the blood test picked that up.

Any form of tobacco use within a 12 month period is considered a tobacco user and you will be rated as a smoker. The blood test determines whether or not there is nicotine in your system. Snuff has nicotine. Nicotine is the cancer-causing agent that causes the individual to be at risk. Therefore, the insurance company has to rate him or her accordingly.

Here is some information for you about nicotine tests:

How does a life insurance company give you an insurance nicotine test for smoker insurance?

Usually the insurance nicotine test for smoker life insurance will consist of a licensed professional paramedical examiner sent to your home to ask you some questions, have you sign your statement, and either take a urine specimen or blood specimen that is sent to a testing laboratory.

The requirements will vary by insurance company depending on the amount of smoker life insurance you request.

Can you get away with not telling the truth on your insurance nicotine test if you smoke?

This is not the right thing to do, it is best to tell the truth on your insurance nicotine test. Although most evidence of nicotine or continine is excreted or removed from your system within 1-2 days (usually all signs are gone within 7 days except from your hair – they don’t test your hair).

The life insurance company can access information from the MIB – Medical Information Bureau from all member companies. In addition they ask you on the application. The application becomes part of the life insurance policy which is a legally binding contract. If you lie on the application you have misled the insurer, and perhaps committed fraud.

What if the insurance company finds out you smoke?

If the insurance nicotine test comes back positive for smoking the smoker life insurance company can either reject your application, offer you a revised rate for smoking, and/or notify the Medical Information Bureau to keep on file.
