Where can I get health insurance if I have a pre-existing condition?

I live in Michigan and no longer have insurance and all prospective insurances won’t cover me with a pre-existing condition.
What do I do?

You have to either get a job, and wait out the 18 month waiting period and get the insurance through your group plan; get added on to a spouse’s group plan (and have the waiting period).

As a general rule, insurers in Michigan are allowed to reject your application for coverage based on your health status. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is the one exception to this rule – they are required to sell a policy to anyone, regardless of health status. That doesn’t mean they have to cover the pre-existing condition, and depending on what’s wrong, they could charge you a thousand a month, or even more.

You’ve learned the secret about health insurance – the time to buy it, is when you’re healthy – because after you’re not healthy any more, no one will sell it to you.

Above poster has it half right. The correct answer is Blue Cross Blue Shield.

They will insure you with a pre-existing condition. You will have coverage for any new occurrences but will have a 6 month waiting period for the pre-existing condition. After 6 months your pre-existing condition will also be covered.

You will not be “uprated” because of your health status. Go to http://www.bcbsm.com to see the plans offered to individuals.
