It is effective as soon as you make the call in most cases. You probably have coverage even if you haven’t received the cards yet. Most insurance companies will bill you the difference, and don’t necessarily require the payment to be in their hands before coverage starts (especially if it is with the same company). I guess they figure if you end up having a wreck before you make payment or if your check bounces, then it’s actually to their advantage for you to fail to make payment. They know they will get their money if you ever expect to get yours.

I’ve insured many cars and made many changes (adding/deleting drivers) that was effective immediately and was only done with a phone call. Surely they gave you a confirmation number when the call was made.

Call them back! They should’ve been able to give you the new premium amount right over the phone. And your coverage should take effect immediately, as soon as you called.

Automatically with some companies. One question, are you already listed as a driver on the policy? If so, automatic coverage for you. Sometimes, insurance companies have to put the request in my fax or phone and then it goes to underwriting for approval. I would call them back and see what the hold up is. Maybe it’s sitting on someone desk waiting for work to be done. With some of these companies if you call them enough they will get the work done faster because they get to know you. Good luck and hope your insurance rates does go sky high.

Should take about 15 minutes, with a halfway decent agent – and they should be able to fax or email you an insurance card, so you have proof of coverage.
