I have been looking into getting insurance on my dog since the previous 2 I spent over $ 10K.
What you need to consider 1st, does your dog have hereditary conditions? My golden retriever are prone to dsyplasia in this dog. Some policies state they don’t cover hereditary conditions.
2nd; pet policies are reimbursement only; need to check if you can take to any vet, ER or are required to use only certain facilities.
3rd; cancer yes, since many dogs due to in-breeding are getting higher incidence of cancer, plus they have oncology treatment for dogs.
4th; need to verify the annual amount and most importantly the incident amount per year; i saw 1 policy that stated $ 7,500 annual, but then stated $ 1,500 per incident. My last dog had tumor at age 10, surgery at the ER was $ 5K; then 2 years later at age 12, got another tumor and they told us due to age and other problems, the expected cost was $ 7,500. Since unknown if this tumor was cancerous or if the dog would survive surgery at his age, we put him down. cost for er/xrays, euthanasia and cremation; $ 1,500
5th; this is one i have not checked into and just remembered. see if they pay for specialists; 2 dogs ago, another golden had seizures, was sent to a specialist who was unable to save him and the specialist cost was $ 4K
6th; routine care is optional on most policies; my thought is that i will not get, since a vet bill for shots, exam may run from $ 100 to $ 200.
This is our 4th golden retriever and age 18 months. I have found a local humane society that we had him neutered and chip installed and they also do vaccinations and can get RX there. Our vet had quoted us around $ 350 to do and the shelter did for $ 125. The vaccinations are almost 1/2 less than the vet.
the quotes i received on most of them were around $ 25 to $ 30 per month. you don’t state if you have a cat or dog, so don’t know if cats are cheaper or are about the same in cost. but the younger your animal is, the cheaper the insurance, since in most cases, at around age 8 in dogs is when they start having serious problems.
good luck
Most pet owners think that pet insurance is expensive which is why they choose not to get any insurance for their dear companions. However, pet owners fail to realize that in times of medical emergencies, like accidents resulting into fractures or diagnosis of cancer, those who do not have any insurance would pay more compared with just getting an insurance.
