Question by Double You: Can anyone help me choosing a Pet Insurance?
Hi,
I have an 8-month old Miniature Schnauzer. I am new to the whole idea of Pet Insurance. I was wondering the following:

- Is there a pet insurance where I can pick the vet of my choice?
- Where the insurance pays the vet directly, as opposed to my paying and then seeking a reimbursement?
- Also, is there one that covers 24-hour emergencies?

I live in Miami. My ZIP is 33132. I would appreciate to finding one that suits my needs as soon as possible. Thank you.

Don’t bother. Find a figure on how much it would cost you per month to purchase it, and put it in a savings account. That way, when you needed the money, you would have it there. If you didn’t need all of the money in the account, eventually you would have a nice little savings account.

here is a link of comparing prices.

yes it would be great to just put away a certain amount each month for an emergency or pay for vet bills. but i can tell you from previous experience most likely will not be prepared.

just last year i put down my 12 yo golden retriever. i had spent about $ 1,500 in vet bills for visits for his pain in his legs, stomach, infections etc. when we took him to the ER the final time it was $ 1,500; this was 12 hours in the ER, x-rays since they found a tumor and the cost to put him down and cremate him. they had given us an estimate of $ 7,500 for the surgery with no expectation it was cancerous or not or if he would even survive the surgery. (Golden’s have a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years on average and did not see that would be his best option)

2 years earlier we paid $ 5K for another tumor that was non-malignant, and had surgery at the ER.

a previous golden at age 10, had seizures that my husband took to the Er and subsequently to a specialist to try and save. he consequently died on the operating table. (he paid out close to $ 5k to try and save him)

from what i have read. you pay and seek reimbursement which stinks, since hopefully they will cover, but either way you are out of pocket till they reimburse.

based on my experience, i am looking at a minimum of $ 5k annual since i am still paying off my credit card for the last golden. some have addtl amount they will pay for normal vet visits, but i don’t believe in my case would be warranted the addtl 10 or 20 per month. the $ 100 to $ 200 vet bill does not kill you, but the thousands that you don’t expect will.

one thing i did see is that even though one showed $ 7,500 annual, they had a $ 1,500 incident limit. that means even if they need surgery that would cost $ 5k, they would only pay a max of $ 1,500???

i have not determined what plan i am getting. but when i narrow the choices down, i will be on the phone prior and ask specifically certain questions based on my experience.

    ie; max per year
    an incident limit
cancer covered? oncology can be expensive.
dsyplasia (spelling) Golden’s? (goldens are known to have, but don’t usually show until age 4
    skin diseases.

do research on the internet of what your breed may have certain tendancies? some plans will exclude certain things that could be excluded for your breeds. goldens and large dogs due to breeding in the last 10 years are prone to cancer. small dogs may have certain things due to breeding or other things make them more likely to develop.

the main thing is to get it now while they are young. most are pricing around $ 30 per month. if they develop certain conditions, you may not be able to get any pet insurance.

    good luck
