Question by Mitsuki: Do you need travel insurance under the youth mobility scheme?
My boyfriend from Australia is coming to the UK for two years under the YMS and he was wondering if he needs travel insurance? It’s very pricey and we don’t want to get it, but if we need to get it we’d like to know.

Well the U.K. website that deals with the program says the following:

When you are in the United Kingdom under the youth mobility scheme, you:

* must not claim state benefits.

So it seems like the U.K. will not cover him.

The Australian Medicare system does provide coverage while in the U.K., however you should review the website below and note the restrictions.
