WIll I be able to rent an apartment if I am unemployed?

Question by maebelar: WIll I be able to rent an apartment if I am unemployed?
Me and my friend are moving in together. I am a student transferring to an out of state school (which is why I won’t have a job when I first get there), good credit, I will be using my refund from Fin Aid && student loans to pay for my portion of the rent. (approx. a 6-10 month lease)

My friend on the other hand is employed full-time, with no credit. She will technically be my co-signer.

What are the chances of us being able to rent an apartment?
Also, is “student loan” considered an additional “income” in regards to being able to pay for an apartment?

Don’t put your student loan as an income, that is showing fraud!

Anyways, some places require a steady job, where others do not.
Do your research, find places you like, schedule appointments with the managers of the apartments, and ask these questions and concerns of yours. You know? State your situation and hope for the best. If it doesn’t work out the first time, keep looking for an apartment that will accept you!

    Good luck.

it is possible in fact that’s what happened to me when I moved across country. I was able to convince them I had enough money to pay the rent until I found a job so I got the apartment. I should warn you that it is a very stressful situation to be in so don’t do it lightly. You will probably be the head of household and she will be the co head. However if you don’t find a job she will have to pay the rent herself and seek repayment from you after the fact.

As long as you can convince management/landlord that you have funds to pay for the apartment, sometimes it doesn’t matter whether you’re employed or not. You should also be aware that BOTH of you may need to have decent credit, as most will do credit checks. If only one of you has to have credit, then a co signer should be fine.

Yes, you can rent a apartment and I would list your position as student on any rental application. There should be no trouble in renting a nice apt.along with the help of your friend. If you are not approved for a apt from a complex, which tend to more strict on who can rent from them, then I would look for a private landlord and rent a apt from them. Best Wishes in your new home and going to school.
