How can I find out if a deceased relative had a home insurance policy?

Question by Brian113: How can I find out if a deceased relative had a home insurance policy?
My mother-in-law died recently and her heirs are going through her papers to settle the estate. However, paperwork for home insurance hasn’t been found. Though it’s possible she didn’t have insurance, we want to find out if she did. How can we do so?

There is no way to know unless you know AT LEAST the company that she might have had a policy with. There is no master database that has every home insurance policy for every company. If you do not know the company, your ONLY hope is to call as many as you possibly can individually.

Also, keep a close eye on her mail.

I would go through her papers to see if you can’t locate SOMETHING.

Was the house paid off? If there was any kind of a mortgage on the home, the bank should know who had the home insurance policy.

    Good luck to you.

If she owned the house outright, she would have to have paid for the policy.

So dig out her checkbook and credit card statements and look.

If the home was financed and a lender held the title, perhaps they will know. You mean property insurance, or do you mean mortgage insurance?

You look at her cancelled checks for the past year. If she didn’t write a check for homeowners insurance, she didn’t have any.

There is absolutely NO OTHER WAY to find out. There’s no ‘central database’ and no agency tracks those records.
