There are different types of covers provided by pets insurers. However, most of them cover the pet in the same manner they cover humans: Life, Health, Injuries etc.
Bear in mind, they will not go for the large sums, usually limited up to US$ 100,000 (some go even less – much less).
There are some insurers who cover pets in the same way they cover livestock – but I wouldn’t recommend that for your home-pet.

1. What do they cover? This depends on the plan that you get. Some have accidents only plans which are the cheapest, some offer comprehensive plans which also cover vaccinations, spays and neuters.
2. What don’t they cover? This depends on the plans, but remember most pet insurance companies don’t accept pets above a certain age, and many don’t cover pre-existing conditions.

3. What happens if someone files a claim? First of all, look for a company that says that they won’t raise the premium if you file a claim.
Most insurnace companies have simple one page claim forms and have made the reimbursement process much easier.
4. THE BEST way to find a good company is to ask your veterinarian, they know which ones are most responsive to their customers.
Here’s what is not covered under most pet insurance health plans:
* Pre-existing conditions
* Prosthetic limbs and devices including motility aids
* Treatment for behavioral issues
* Breeding, whelping, and pregnancy
* Cremation and burial
* Injury caused deliberately by you or any other person or pet residing in your home
* Injury or illness resulting from fighting, racing, cruelty, or neglect
* Cosmetic procedures such as tail docking, ear cropping, and dew claw removal (although covered when medically necessary)
* DNA testing or cloning
* Organ transplants
* Stem-cell treatments (except when approved beforehand by Embrace)
* Acts of God including but not limited to avian flu or nuclear war
Full pet coverage means that all accidents, illnesses, and breed-specific conditions are covered (except those that are preexisting) as well as the following:
* Cancer treatment
* Diagnostic testing and imaging (e.g. X-ray, ultrasound, MRI)
* Surgery, hospitalization, and nursing care
* Alternative therapies and rehabilitation
You can also add the optional drug & dental plan
