Can you claim pet insurance on your taxes?

Question by Blazzzzin: Can you claim pet insurance on your taxes?
I’m thinking about getting insurance for my dog. Is that a write off?? Also, what if I never owe anything? Will I get that money back that I paid for the insurance if I can in fact write it off?

No it’s not deductible, whether you owe anything or not. So no you won’t get the pet insurance money back through your taxes.

Sorry, but pet insurance is not deductible on your federal tax return.

No insurance premiums are tax deductable unless it is business related, such as malpractice insurance for doctors.

    No.

    1. You do not get back money that you “write off”. You get a small percentage, usually no more than 1/4.

    2. There is no “write off” for insurance for an actual pet. You can claim expenses for an animal only if it is a business asset (farm animal) or a guide animal for a disabled person.
