Can I cash in my savings bonds or am I too young?

Question by Katie: Can I cash in my savings bonds or am I too young?
I’m 16 years old and I have $ 6,700 in savings bonds. I was wanting to cash in $ 300 of it for something important but am I old enough to cash them in by myself? They have my name and SSN on them. They are dated from 1994 all the way to 2007. They are all Series EE. I have my drivers license for identification and I have my original SS Card and birth certificate. Will I be able to take them to the bank and cash some of them in?
Some of the bonds have my mom’s name on them at the very bottom saying Or “moms name” but at the top it says to “my full name” and it has my address. But some of them have only my name. None of them have my dads name. But my mom died when I was 9.

It depends on the exact title on the face of the bonds if it says just your name, you should be able to cash them. If they are, as an example, your mom’s name ITF (in trust for) your name…. then no your mom will need to cash them. You might also be there as a beneficiary, then again no you would not be able to cash them.

Talk with your mom or dad…. or your bank. If you go to your bank be sure to take a bond so they can see the ownership! You will have to go to the Bank with your ID to cash them. If you do not have an account, you will probably need to cash them at your parents bank. Most banks will not cash them without an account relationship …. they will do it with your parents as account holders.
