I just took in a Golden Retriever who does not have any history of problems. BUT, my OTHER dog has had at least three emergency surgeries/procedures and I did not have insurance for her. I would like to avoid costly mistake of being uninsured in the future with my ‘new’ dog.

Seriously – ask your vet.
Pet insurance isn’t true insurance, and it doesn’t pay your vet FOR you – you still pay the vet, and then submit the bill for reimbursement.
Me, I have a dog and three cats, and do rescue work, and *I* don’t think pet insurance is worth it.
