any other experiences with the firm, trying to pressure a loan based on them ordering an apraisal before any signed documents.

They look decent from their website. But I guess it can be deceiving. Your question does not make it clear what they were doing. Where they expecting you to sign before the appraisal was done? The appraisal is to protect the lender, so that should not bother you.
