can someone tell me why a social security card is so important?

Question by John S: can someone tell me why a social security card is so important?
i’m pretty young so sorry if its a dumb question, but exactly why is a social security card so important? i need it for just about everything – job, school, license, etc…..but i don’t know why it is so important.
QUESTIONS:
1.) i remember having that blue card for as long as I can remember. exactly why do i have that card, considering that I had to take a test for my driver’s license. why not a test for the ssn card? where exactly did I get that card from?
2.) do I have special privileges with that card? in other words — what can I do with that card that others without it can’t? what does that card allow me to do? if I didn’t have the card — would I be screwed?
3.) i heard something about seniors collecting “social security” later in their lives. does the seniors “social security” have anything to do with that little blue card? or am I mistaken?

is there anything else I need to know about the blue card? is it good? bad? my ticket to freedom? thanks in advance……

Social Security is what identifies you from every other living soul on the planet. While your name can be duplicated any number of times…your SS# can’t, there are an infinite number of numbers that can make up your number…it’s very important to be VERY careful with that number as I’m sure you’ve heard of identity theft…once someone has that number, your life is no longer simple…be careful and take care of it

  1. cool person

the government check’s you out with this, lets just say it is the credit card of your life. we all need this.as long as you live in this land (deal with it little brother)

    1. It’s likely that your parents applied for your card for you shortly after you were born. There was no test involved, just some paperwork and a copy of your birth certificate.

    2. Your SSN card serves as a more direct form of identification. Some of the reasons people will ask to see it are when you get a drivers’ license, apply for some jobs, sign up for a bank account or apply for a mortgage. I don’t know about any other state than Ohio, but in Ohio they no longer print your SSN on your drivers’ license – even if you ask. Therefore, you need proof of your number. You’re not screwed if you don’t have the card if you lose it or it accidentally gets destroyed (unless you lose it and it gets into the wrong hands) – it’s not that hard to get a new one. If you didn’t have the number at all, however, it’d be hard for you to get through life.

    3. Yes – when you look at a pay stub, you’ll see a certain amount of your gross income was paid into “Social Security.” This plan was designed for money to be paid into over years that a person works, and for a portion of the money to be paid back after age 62. The person’s number is linked up to how much they paid in over the years, and therefore the government knows to whom to send the check. Social Security was meant to protect the elderly and retired from having no income. By the time our generations are at retirement age, however, this plan will probably be obsolete.

The card is basically your identity, so try not to lose it, and definitely exercise caution about who you give the number to. It’s way too easy for someone to fradulently steal your number and do all kinds of nasty things. Hope this helps.
