Engagement ring stolen at a store. Will their insurance reimburse me?

Question by Sarah: Engagement ring stolen at a store. Will their insurance reimburse me?
I went to the tanning bed earlier today and set my engagement ring on my glasses beside the bed. Got up and put my clothes and glasses back on. Went to the car and realized that my ring wasn’t on. Went right back in and the employee had already cleaned the bed and of course my ring was nowhere to be found. She and I were the only two in the store. Will the store owners insurance cover my ring? I’m so sick about this! I’ve been a single mom for the past ten years and have finally found mr. right. The meaning of the ring is so much and all I want is my ring back! Problem is that I’m friends with the owner and don’t want her to have bad feelings towards me.

IF you were the only 2 people in the building and we can be certain rings don’t either walk, run, or fly what other explanation do you have for where it went?

When you tell the owner you need her insurance to cover your ring she will want to know the details of what happened and when it happened. When she knows WHEN she will know who was working.

Why don’t you approach your friend and ask her if someone turned the ring in? Tell her you left it there but when you came back to get it, the ring was gone. You cannot come out and accuse someone of stealing your ring (no matter how obvious it is) unless you actually see them.

How can you be sure that there wasn’t someone else lurking around and possibly stole it while you were in the tanning bed? Or between the time you left and returned? It’s for this reason that I really don’t think that the salon’s insurance will cover this. Do you have a renter’s policy or homeowners policy? You may have some coverage that way.

Unless they accepted responsibility for the care, custody and control of your ring, I don’t think they will pay.

I’ve had my purse stolen right from under my nose at work in the middle of the day….it happened so fast, I didn’t realize what happened.
It was only SECONDS and my purse was gone.

I had to make a claim under my homeowners insurance – our office policy didn’t cover for this.

    Good Luck!

Nope. They don’t have any coverage, that will cover your stuff.

If you had it insured seperately, on your renters or homeowners policy, that’s where to find coverage. Otherwise, you’re uninsured.

    Here’s the bad news -

The tanning place will probably not provide coverage (by probably, I mean a 99% chance they will not provide coverage).

However…….depending on the type of insurance policy you (or whomever gave you the ring) you might, possibly, have coverage for loss or “mysterious disappearance”. BUT, that type of coverage is relatively uncommon in insurance policies, but there is a chance it might be there.

Another thing – if you honestly believe the ring was stolen, you should file a police report. Most (if not all) insurance companies are going to require a police report be filed for a stolen object.
