If Countrywide declares bankruptcy – what happens to the mortgages it holds? People get a home for free?

Just wondering what will happen to all the people connected to Countrywide – how would something like this work out? There have to be 100′s of thousand’s of people who pay a mortgage payment each month to Countrywide because Countrywide technically “owns” their house ….. so what happens?
